What do you think?

I know, the look is entirely different from any of the looks on my sites however, I have decided being a little eclectic is okay these days.

If you are looking for great deals on business cards check out-- VistaPrint or ooprint.com.

For those of you who read Q's Wire, you may be asking-- Regina ordered business cards? I have kind of given up on carrying business cards because I never get business communiqués. I believe I have communications interference and therefore pointless for me to carry business cards. Instead I carry an invoice book and my MacBook. I do not think everyone is in my situation and if you are in business, it is always good to have your business card handy. One reason for me to carry a card? Provides my site[s] urls.

I recently read that a good going green antidote is to reuse old business cards. Simply scratch out the old information and insert the new. I had a lot of old Rockwell business cards that I have passed out using this technique. Still no calls.

Technorati Tags: Business Cards, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

Flex, JavaFX and ActionScript

As you may recall I have been experimenting with ActionScript mainly used in Flash development efforts. Innovations are coming online everyday. I recently added the JavaFX module to my NetBeans installation and this looks like a promising choice for quick declarative GUI development.

Here is an interesting article on Flex, JavaFX and ActionScript if you would like to learn more about these web development environments.

Technorati Tags: JavaFX, Flex, ActionScript, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

Where is your bio page?

I am in the process of trying to generate more interest in the ProfessionalProfiles service. To that end, I am adding 30 day complimentary listings for those professionals I come in contact with-- who provide me with a business card and for whom I can easily find bios.

Do you maintain an "about us" page on your site? Oddly enough I do not-- which is surprising since that is what I am looking for when I put together my version of a professional's profile.

ProfessionalProfiles is a highly promoted, no frills listing service. It is an open service-- meaning you do not have to be a member or have a profile to research the listings. This easy access is useful to both those looking for professional service providers as well as those listing.

A complimentary listing is easily upgraded to an annual listing for a small fee. If you would like to take advantage of the 30 day trial offer-- email me at professionalprofiles@hosting-q.com providing your site, contact information and where your bio page can be found. The annual listing fee is $9.95. All fees are paid in person or through my PayPal account-- thomas@qisoftware.com. I do not want anyone to pay someone else or pay more than they should for any QiSoftware service or listing. All QiSoftware/Hosting-Q fees [including ProfessionalProfiles listings] are posted on the sites.

Where is my bio page? Oddly enough, the best about me summary is in the sidebar of this blog.

Technorati Tags: ProfessionalProfiles, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

Just Spoke With Shea

I just spoke with Shea from DoubleClicks. She explained that they are now owned by Google and email addresses were updated.

She seemed to be concerned with the fact I was not more concerned with the number of visits. If I am not getting credit for impressions, nor sales why would I be concerned with the number of visits? For both urls, where I currently show the New York Times Best Sellers I have 8 visits total for the month of May. I think those account for my visits-- testing the interface-- and curiosity about a book.

Have you clicked on any of the books?

I have had 5 sales starting in October 07 and the last March 08 from this affiliate partner. I think the majority of these sales are from the books within Q's Wire's sidebar and not the links from the new interface I installed on March 13, 2008. The last sale, March 17, 2008 could be from the new interface but I am not sure. I have made $4.90 and have not received a check because it is below the pay threshold.

I also explained to Shea, I had been an affiliate through BFast and have always had a problem getting credit. Her email-- seemed to be in the same vein as other affiliate partners. I ask about a transaction-- and I do not get "what transaction" I get "which one are you talking about-- meaning more than one transaction". This is laughing in my face. I am not laughing.

I would like to walk before I run. If I am not getting impression credit that tracks with my site stats-- why would I trust visit and sales stats from the same reporting mechanism? I am baffled. I feel there are clever people that seem to think clever words can overlook fraud. Fraud is fraud.

I hope Shea was not being paid for any sales I made-- since she agreed I had not had any since March '08 and since I have no sales-- why keep the links available? Shea gets my point I am sure. Maybe she can shoot off another email.

FBI/DOJ-- my affiliate stats have always looked wrong. This would be fraud. In the case of this affiliate-- I think the list is useful on the WiredPages Library page-- so I will probably just disconnect the links and remove them from Q's Wire's store page. I am not providing free sales because the United States has decided my rights can be violated in broad daylight and there is nothing I can do about it.

You owe jail. I do not owe leeches and criminals.

ITunes-- I also have the same feelers out for you. I have had absolutely no sales. I have two interfaces and links all over the place. No sales? Apple does not need to take from me. Who would?

Technorati Tags: Get your Slop off me, WiredPages, < QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

Emailing Affiliate Support

I recently wrote to an affiliate program concerning a problem with impression and sales credit for one of my affiliate advertisers. I provide links to the the New York Times Best Sellers and show the book covers with my affiliate links.

I thought the book cover images would show the credit. Apparently not so I added the 1x1 pixel graphic the other night. Still no credit.

The original correspondence I sent was responded to with an incident tracking number. The response I received recently from someone claiming to be with DoubleClick--

Hello,

I am the Performics program manager on the Barnes & Noble.com account. Nasira passed your information onto me and let me know that you are concerned that the number of impressions being reported is low.

Performics counts one impression every 30 minutes from each computer. So the most you could generate a day from your own computer is 48 impressions.

I hope this helps!

Thanks,
Shea

Shea Murphy Browning
Senior Program Manager
DoubleClick Performics
180 N LaSalle Suite 1100
Chicago, IL 60601
shmurphy@google.com

Does google have an email service other than gmail? This is a note to those that check my stats. I used the old license and key-- and not the one that was provided yesterday. The numbers were very similar however those that were provided yesterday appear to be lower than those I had in the code. Normally when one signs up for a service the account numbers or keys are larger. This is probably no big deal-- I simply like for things like this to track. Google and Technorati use the same keys. Weather.com did not. Site statistics the issue I am concerned with.

Technorati Tags: WiredPages, World Weather, < QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

Stupid Me...

Yes, I did leave a door open-- with the last round of updates. Often, site submission to web directories gets a lot of the credit.

There are many web directories available for web site submission-- however, most require a monthly or annual fee. Finding a free web directory with Pagerank [PR] that does not require a monthly or annual recurring payment is getting harder these days. DirMania-- is such a find. How are they maintaining their PR status? Through careful review of sites submitted.

Our business web directory is search engine friendly and having a website listed will improve your rankings.

The site is easy to use and easy to navigate with many top level and lower level categories to help guide you through your selection process. Top level categories include:

Business

News

Computers & Technology

Arts & Humanities
Under this category-- some of the sub-catagories include:

Antiques

Crafts

Directories

... to name only a few.

To submit your site-- go to the category/sub-category that best fits your site's content and select the "Suggest Link" menu item at the top of each category page. It is that easy. On the submission page there are also helpful suggestions to help get your site listed as well as noticed-- once it is listed.

DirMania does not accept all submissions-- however if you have a useful site and meaningful content, there is a good chance you will be accepted within a 24 hour window. The one time review fee to determine whether your site fits their listing criteria is refunded if your site is not accepted.

Technorati Tags: Review, Web Directory, Advertisement, DirMania, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Bloggers Help Everyone...

The Google PR debate aside-- why would services like PayPerPost be so controversial? One answer: traditional publishers are concerned that bloggers are taking their advertising dollars.

I think the internet spawned a lot of "new" business-- specific to its very existence. The dollars that traditional publishers are concerned about are not from the traditional source pool. These are new advertising revenues-- and I think the the noise is being generated by those concerned with "old school" issues.

Who are traditional publishers? Newspapers, television, the local PennySaver Magazine-- that is delivered to every home in my area on a scheduled basis.

There is an online TShirt Company site that is really a great site with neat tools to help users create custom T-Shirts. I found this site online and they do use blogging services to get the word out. This is an example of an internet business that could have promoted in any environment-- but since it is the sophisticated interface the site employs that is one of its best features-- advertising using the method the site owners choose-- via the internet I believe is a stroke of genius. Traditional advertisers could not provide the interactive notice this site deserves that bloggers can.

I was reading an article today about Craigslist [WebProNews] and the revenue estimates the major SF newspaper claims this service has taken from their coffers-- because of Craiglist's free advertising.

Internet users want things fast. This is not about traditional revenue streams. This is about getting the word out. I do not always have time to visit traditional online sites-- like the Washington Post. I visit when someone directs me to a story on their site. Who is doing that directing? Bloggers. This has nothing to do with "old" money. This has to do with news, information, and finding it-- bloggers are finding it. Bloggers, oniine classifieds and other non-tradional services are making the difference in the fast paced world of instant news.

Do not hurt bloggers. I used to get the Washington Post everyday. I do not have the time to read the Washington Post these days. I was on the Washington Post site today-- because a blogger discussed a story they ran about a year ago. The last time I was on? About a month ago to change my account email address. Before that-- I cannot remember.

The internet is fast. Bloggers can be the best free advertising-- traditional publishers have. Why not think about how to ensure everyone is paid and stop the noise about unethical advertising-- by bloggers. Who do you think you are kidding? This whine has been a long whine-- that does not hold much water. Keep in mind-- the Google PR debate as related to paid blogging services is not an area this post attempts to address.

Technorati Tags: QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

Investigating Affiliate Management Programs

Earlier, I had an interesting conversation with a marketing representative from a new affiliate network. I am investigating whether or not to offer affiliate partnerships to publishers to help promote ProfessionalProfiles.

Over the years I have partnered with several advertisers via affiliate networks where I was the publisher. The percentages offered me in some cases were good [i.e., web hosting partners] and in other cases-- not the 10% I want to offer.

No matter what percentage promised-- I have never realized any revenue from any of my affiliate partnerships. The marketing representative wanted to offer 40% to the publishers and the affiliate management network would take 30% on top. So if I offer a profile submission for $10.00, each sale the publisher makes would garner him/her $4.00 and the affiliate management network $1.20. So after I have paid everyone-- I would get $4.80.

I am not sure if I will use affiliates to promote ProfessionalProfiles-- but I am glad I investigated how all of this works.

The benefits of using an affiliate network to manage your affiliate program? Accounting, payment, legal, etc.

The marketing representative-- as we were ending our call, asked if there was anything else I wanted to ask. I explained that I was a publisher for several affiliate networks and routinely developed software tools and interfaces to help promote advertisers products and services. I told her about WiredPages and asked her to have a look around the news service [ApartmentFinder, Books, iTunes]. She agreed to do just that.

Maybe I should concentrate my efforts on providing publishers, management teams and advertisers with customizable software tools?

Technorati Tags: Affiliate Management Programs, ProfessionalProfiles, WiredPages, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

WiredPages Sports Scores

Recently, I have been adding new features to WiredPages. Visitors click on the affiliate link-- and are taken directly to the purchase page.

The interface-- installed on the WiredPages Libraries page is a servlet and can be customized for any site-- given you have an affiliate partnership with a retailer selling books. The ads run mostly on WiredPages however, I have been known to place an ad or two on my personal blog, Q's Wire.

Recently, one of the blog advertising services that I write for had an opportunity for the affiliate. I have never made any money through the affiliate ads, however did off the blog post I submitted.

The irony? I can place ad after ad using affiliate links on the sidebars of the blog and my pagerank is unaffected. My sidebars remain the constant on the blog. I place a link within a post and my pagerank drops to zero. This is not entirely true, because Q's Wire seems to have a hidden pagerank-- [the pragerank is still being reported at its previous level].

I bet you want to say-- most affiliate links have some sort of coded link and does not pass the publisher's pagerank to the advertising site. Okay, that maybe true but what about blog directories and other sidebar links?

Do you think blog advertising services should use more coded links too? What about sidebar links that are paid links but that do not use coded links? They are not affecting PR.

Technorati Tags: Coded Advertising Links, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

When to say yes?

Recently one of my LinkedIn contacts sent me an email about a new service he offers. I really like the service and think it could be very useful. The problem? Though some areas of the service are free others are not - and since I would be providing free promotion, I debated whether to provide the write up. The other problem with the service I noted? it could be exploited. In the end, I decided against the [Q's Wire] Site Find article.

I find myself becoming less likely to share free finds these days. This service was not all that free-- however I do not blame those requiring payment these days-- for Internet services. I feel it is long overdue.

When do you say yes?

Technorati Tags: Site Finds, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

Remote Access & Management

I have been testing a lot of remote venues for work, blogging and just for a change of scenery. I love WiFi. Un-tethered access to all the things I work on from any location makes me feel like I can do anything from anywhere. New innovations and ideas come to me all the time. Now I can put them into action anywhere.

While marveling at my new found freedoms I came across a product by Uplogix that allows computer network managers a way to work from remote locations. Read more here.

You would think that I just found out mobile computing existed. You should not have done that.

Removed the last remnants of AdSense from all new posts to this blog. This is a Blogger [Google] blog which resides on a qisoftware.com sub-domain. What this means? Not all posts were republished with the new template format so Adsense ads will appear on older posts.

If they want the feed for quickmaps, blogger calendar, etc. and me to discontinue using their services I will be more than happy to. They owe me a big paycheck.

I still have adsense running on Q's Wire and NS&J forums. I have owned notebooks before and the biggest problem-- extending the life of the rechargeable battery.

Almost all of the gadgets I use for business; notebooks, cameras, phones, etc. use some sort of rechargeable battery. The digital camera batteries seem to take the longest to recharge and what I seem to recharge the most. I tend to order rechargeable batteries online and have found some really great deals.

I like online stores that focus on one thing and Allbats.com offers nothing but batteries. Batteries for every conceivable mobile device, brand and size.

I always completely drain my batteries before recharging. This greatly extends the life of rechargeable batteries. However, if you have extended yours as far as possible, check out Allbats.com for new ones. It could be well worth your time.

Technorati Tags: Batteries, Rechargeable Batteries, Advertisement, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Barnes & Noble.com Affiliate Interface

Awhile back I developed an interface for the WiredPages Entertainment page that took Billboards Top CDs and searched Barnes & Noble coupling my affiliate information so that I would get credit when users clicked on their CD selection.

I loved the interface but it was dependent on two resources; Billboard and the Barnes & Noble affiliate network. I removed the interface because Barnes & Noble discontinued their partnership with the service that handled their affiliate network.

I was an affiliate of the Barnes & Noble Network, however had no official relationship with Billboard.

When Barnes and Noble started their partnership with another affiliate network manager, I again signed up. This was some time ago. I have thought about creating a new interface-- but what I wanted was the New York Times Bestseller Book list. When I checked earlier, there was no list on the Barnes & Noble site and the xml feed the network manager provided did not have a bestseller option. Today, Barnes & Noble.com has the New York Times Bestseller list. I have decided to create an interface.

Why tell you all this? Another way to tell you about what I do. WiredPages showcases what I do. I reinstalled the ApartmentFinder applet sans commission links on the WiredPages Real Estate page and have been taking care of general house cleaning issues as related to the news service and other areas of QiSoftware sites.

This year has gone by so fast I am surprised I do not have more plans as related to new projects and services I want to offer. Instead, I will turn my attention to two existing QiSoftware services: Hosting-Q [web hosting service] and the ProfessionalProfiles service. I hope to find new audiences and clients for each of these service offerings in the coming year-- and will work diligently toward that end.

Technorati Tags: Hosting-Q, Linux Hosting, ProfessionalProfiles, WiredPages, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today

WebbyPlanet.com

Many online retailers offer consumers the chance to retrieve instant savings though use of a discount code at checkout. I myself having used discount codes for online purchases can say without hesitation, it is one of the things I love about shopping online.

WebbyPlanet.com offers consumers a central location to find discount codes for many online retailers. Though WebbyPlanet.com mostly caters to online shoppers, one can sometimes find coupons for in store purchases.

Often discount codes are tucked away on retailer sites. Sites like WebbyPlanet.com offer the latest discounts for most online retailers as well as a way to search for specific retailers, goods or services.

WebbyPlanet.com also offers retailers a means to list their discounts-- making it a quick solution for both finding and listing online shopping discounts. Both big and small online retailers list with WebbyPlanet.com and consumers will find current discounts because the site is updated daily.

The site offers store descriptions, a way to provide feedback for the different retailers and easy navigation to assistant with finding the discount codes for your purchases. Consumers can also subscribe to the site's newsletter informing of the current coupon discounts available across a wide spectrum of retailers.

Who doesn't love saving while shopping online?

Technorati Tags: Review, WebbyPlanet, Advertisement, Online Coupons, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

ProfessionalProfiles-- Marketing

Last spring I submitted a project plan to Forbes for ProfessionalProfiles. The concept was based on a service I found on a women's site that provided unhindered access to the group's professional profiles.

What I liked about the service was that anyone could access the profiles, the ease in which it was to navigate the profiles and that the system worked. Often I have perused organization sites that do not offer public access to business directory areas or the service itself is problematic [lots of SQL errors].

A month or so later after researching several applications and functionality I chose Noahs Classifieds as the backbone for the service. I installed Noahs Classifieds on WingSix servers, my web host at the time. There were all sorts of problems installing the package on their servers so I abandoned the project for awhile not wishing to develop an entirely custom application.

Over the summer I switched web hosts and found that I had no problems installing Noahs Classifieds so I began development work. The service sits on a sub domain on my hosting site [Hosting-Q] and is currently the most popular area on the site. Over the last 30 days there have been 462 unique visitors with 541 pageviews to that area alone. This according to Google Analytics which I have found is very conservative when reporting traffic for my sites.

I credit a lot of the visits to my forum signatures, a promo I run in the header of Q's Wire... and a listing placed here.

The thing is-- there are only about 6 profiles-- to date. With the audience the site generates, I am researching why this is the case? I intend on correcting this problem. The listing fee is nominal and I promote the service quite a bit. For less than $10.00/year I work at putting your business and services before others that may need them-- and I have a proven track record.

I will continue to look for new ways to promote this service-- however it seems that even the very conservative numbers Google provides, should garner more interest than I am seeing. I was promoting QiSoftware on a shoestring budget. A forty dollar expense on the women's site when I had other priorities was not something I could justify. I could justify $10.00. I should be seeing more interest from those on a shoestring budget either wanting or needing to list.

I still like this idea and always thought it was a good idea. I will not get rich putting this service to good use nor will anyone else-- not unless a profile listing finds the right target. There should be more interest. Are you listed?

Technorati Tags: ProfessionalProfiles, QiSoftware, Q's Wire...

Join BusinessBlogs Today
